If you’ve seen a drama in a movie theater in the past month you might have seen the horrible trailer for The Social Network, aka “The Facebook Movie.” The trailer is a mixed up collection of scenes showing people living the high life, being dorks, and yelling at each other. There aren’t any audience surrogate or clear protagonist characters, elements that help draw the viewer into the story. The whole thing seems to ride on the Facebook name, pandering to the haters.
The movie… is doing really well at Rotten Tomatoes right now. 100% tomatoes, with 14 reviewers so far. Sure the usual movie industry plants must be in the mix, but there are some actual reviewers of renown (marked “Top Critic” by the site) in the mix. The comparisons with other movies are what is most fascinating. Reviewers are saying The Social Network is comparable The Godfather, Citizen Kane, Fight Club, Rashomon, and The Graduate. It’s crazy! I still won’t see it in the theaters though, I have a snobbish rule about not paying to see a movie in a theater if it doesn’t have robots, explosions, or anything that warrants a giant screen.
Eh, I’m putting this under anthropology.
